Getting that work experience - essential to a career in the Media.
From this conference it seems that the main way to get your face noticed and your name remembered and therefore to find gainful employment in this industry is to get work experience and as much of it as possible. What follows are some tips for getting that work experience placement.

Work experience is hugely important to companies as well as individuals. It is difficult to make a convincing case but it is worth it for both the individual to gain an insight and the company to view possible new staff with low risk.

- BBC Scheme - Centralised, application online by placements and departments. The person specification may indicate educational or personality profile.
- Not necessarily London, offices in Birmingham and Manchester as well as many others.
Tips
- Look what is on the placement description, interests and hobbies are important.
- Have an awareness of the BBC and the department you are applying for, what is their output, what issues concern them; show that you have done your research.
- Submit a well written application form, no spelling or grammatical errors.
- Be punctual and well presented.
- Show your passion for the job.
- Best reference about a student recently, “. . .pleasure to have around, knew his stuff, got a lot out because he put a lot in.”
